John Spezia

Head Men's Basketball Coach and Athletic Director-

In 1968 Coach Spezia graduated from Bismarck-Henning High School. While there, he earned 10 varsity letters in football, basketball, baseball, and track. In his senior year, he helped lead the Blue Devils to a regional and sectional championship; the best finish in the state tournament by a Bismarck team.

Upon graduating from high school, Coach Spezia attended DACC as a student athlete from 1968-1970. He continued his education at Eureka College in Eureka, Illinois. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Physical Edu- cation and a minor in History. While at Eureka, he earned three varsity letters in basketball. He served as captain his senior year and led the team in free throw percentage.

Coach Spezia got his first coaching job, after he graduated from Eureka College, in 1973 at Sheldon High School in Sheldon, Illinois. He was an assistant basketball and baseball coach for two years. From Sheldon he went to North Judson, Indiana as an assistant in basketball and baseball and freshman football coach. In his second year at North Judson, he was named the varsity basketball head coach. His team went 11and 11. After two years at North Judson, he began attending Valparaiso University where he spent three years as a Graduate Assistant Coach while completing his Master's Degree in Psychology.

Coach Spezia made a return to Sheldon High School for two years, after his graduate work, as Athletic Director- tor, Head Boy's Baseball, and Head Boy's Basketball Coach. Although he did not have a starter over six feet tall, his two-year record was 25 and 20 while holding opponents to an average of 54 points per game. His teams were noted for their excellent fundamental play and tenacious defense.

In 1983 Coach Spezia returned to DACC to take over a program that had come off of its third straight losing season, had no scholarships, and no Booster Club. His time at DACC has led to fifteen winning seasons, twenty-two tournament championships, one sectional championship, two conference championships, six re- gion championships, two seventh place finishes in the NJCAA Division 11 National Tournament, a second, third, and fourth place finish in the National Tournament, and a NJCAA Division H National Championship in 1991. Now DACC has 12 tuition scholarships and an active Booster Club with over 100 members.

Since his return to DACC, his teams have been known for their shooting skills and defensive play. In his twenty years as head coach at DACC, his teams have averaged a 50.2 field goal percentage including 39.1 % from the three point line and 71.2% from the free throw line. His teams have been nationally ranked on several occasions including a 1994 pre-season ranking of number one. He was also the only Division II coach in NJCAA history to beat the number one ranked NJCAA Division I team in history. He did this by beating Kankakee Community College in 1991.

In the summer of 1994, Coach Spezia was selected by USA Basketball to be the assistant coach for the north team, who was coached by former University of Wisconsin basketball coach and was the General Manager of the Vancouver Grizzlies, Stu Jackson.

During the 2001-02 season, Coach Spezia took a leave of absence from DACC to become Head Coach and General Manager of the Derby Storm, a professional basketball team in the British Professional Basketball League. While with the Storm, he coached two former DACC players Jemar Miller and Dumell Robinson. Coach Spezia has also taken a select team to Italy in the summer of 2001 and has organized the Caribbean Splash Tournament in Antiqua.

Coach Spezia has helped out at numerous summer camps throughout the country. His is also President of Hoopmaker Shooting Camps and Clinics. There have been over 2,000 campers to come through his camps.

During his coaching career Coach Spezia has helped more than 55 players receive scholarships to four- year schools (12 from DACC) to Division I programs. He has had two Junior College All-Americans and six Academic All-Americans.

Coach Spezia is happily married to Nancy and has one daughter Rachel Lucking.  He also has two step-daughters, Angela and Somer, two step-granddaughters, MaKenzie and Tiffany and one step-grandson, MaCabe.
